My Friend Who Is A Director, Not A Hero (Yet)!

“You think you are a hero?” asked the English teach incredulously. “Director, actually!” responded Gopi nonchalantly, without breaking a sweat. It was the communications lab period and one of the students was presenting his essay. The lab was air conditioned and to compound the matter further, it was the period after lunch. Most of us were in post-lunch euphoria and chatting incessantly. As it normally happens, the teacher had to intervene and her ire was directed towards Gopi, who was very much visible with his ‘catchy’ attire. Gopi was flustered that he was the one targeted rather than the entire group and rolled his eyes as he stood up. The teacher was not satisfied with his gesture and cue the first sentence of this blog. Naturally, Gopi was requested, in very polite terms, to meet our department head to face repercussions for his unruly behavior. This wasn’t new to Gopi who had a ‘good’ working relationship with the department head due to his frequent altercations wit...

Alien Covenant: Common Sense Goes for a Toss

I normally don't post reviews for movies, but a movie I recently watched made me come up with a criticism. To start with, I like Ridley Scott and the way how he goes about making movies. Warning! Spoilers ahead! Covenant is a star ship with more than 2000 people on board on the way to colonize a habitable planet. The people are all in hibernation. The main crew is woken up by a neutrino storm which kills one of them. The ship stops for repairs. At this point they receive transmissions from a nearby previously unknown planet calling for help. The captain of the star ship's crew contemplates about visiting the planet as their actual destination is quite far away. Moreover, the newly discovered planet seems similar to Earth. Well! All smooth sailing so far! How stupid can you be? #1 The captain asks the crew members about their opinion. Most of them don't want to go back to hibernation and choose to visit the new planet. I expected the captain to say something on the lines...

The Ominous Birthday Comet

I have tried my hands at a short story. Please bear with me if I have made any mistakes!      "26, November 26!". I had a shock of my life when she uttered that. How was it possible? Can it really be true or some wicked mind was at play in the background? This is going to haunt me. Oh, wait, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Damodar, aged 25, an average student. I am a normal guy. If I am walking in a crowd, 90% chances are that you wouldn't find me remarkable. So what had shocked me? Let me tell you my side of the story. I was into my second year in engineering when the story begins. I had no interest in studies, primarily because I was forced into it in the first place. I was more interested in the culinary sciences. But my parents would have none of it. So, engineering happened. I had cleared the first year of my engineering remarkably well, considering my lack of interest.      There was a girl in my class whom I was interested in. Vidya! ...

My Friend Who Said Life Is A Circle

We all have a friend in our group who can crack jokes at will and keep everyone in good spirits. When I say jokes, the ones which irritate others in the name of a ‘joke’ don’t really make the cut! I have one such friend. He studied with me in college and was my roommate in my final year. The last benches in the class were our haunting spots. Listening to lectures in the class was mostly a hobby; Hardly done regularly! Our chosen field didn’t particularly interest us, mainly because we did not choose it in the first place. Somebody else did the choosing for us!             Let me tell you about this friend of mine. He is mostly cool. It is not easy to ruffle him up easily. Most of the guys would try and feel it rebound on them. It was difficult to get on top of him. In one incident, we were having quite a laugh in of the lectures without doing the assigned work. The teacher walked up to our bench and asked my friend to do...

NGO Volunteering @ Velliangiri

It has been a long time since I posted in my blog. This post is about the eco-volunteering I rendered along with my classmates on behalf of OSAI, a NGO, at Velliangiri near Coimbatore. We did the work for 10 hours non-stop and I have used a narration from my point of view. I have split each hour as a separate topic for greater impact and coverage. OSAI - NGO & Volunteering I had just confirmed with the head of OSAI, an NGO, for volunteering work on 7th of March. Mr. Kalidasan conveyed to us that the work would concern the inspection of plastics carried by the travelers to Velliangiri. The full details were not clear to us. Daniel, the foreign exchange student, offered to come and he along with few others took the bus to Esha Centre near Velliangiri. Shivarathiri in Coimbatore is usually associated with a multitude of people traveling the mountain stretch in Velliangiri. People come from afar to climb the mountain on the auspicious day. People congregating in such large num...

A Fast, But Fun Filled Euro Trip

The college trip to Europe is one of my most memorable trips in my life. I had already visited Europe before when my dad was working there, but I was little then, so my experiences were filled with food in fast food restaurants and other trivial things. This time around, I was in my teen years and I had a lot to look forward to.                 A travel agency organised our trip. We took the Qatar Airways to Frankfurt via Doha. We were accompanied by three of our staff. The flight travel was eventful. One of our staff, who was unaccustomed to alien food, avoided eating and fainted during the trip. Fortunately, he revived soon after. I tried to take a long wink after the incident, but was unsuccessful. The aerial view when we entered Qatar was nothing short of spectacular. Most of us managed to strike off certain morning duties at Qatar! The plane we...

The “Final” Hurrah!

I slowly trudged up the stairs and walked towards the exam hall. Boys were huddled near the steps and talking about everything except the exams. Near the room, sitting along the balcony, were the girls, immersed in their books. It was the last exam of the final semester, my final B.E. exam. I did not feel any difference. Probably, it was due to the fact that it was a management paper or maybe it was because I was so much used to writing exams for the past four years. Whatever it was, I banished all the thoughts out of my mind and sat down to wait for the exam to start. The invigilator walked into the hall and, as was the norm, started shouting at the girls to come inside. The girls hurriedly uploaded some more data onto their non-volatile memories and hurried into the exam hall. The question paper duly arrived and I gave it a read. The questions were easy and I started writing. Halfway through the paper, I looked back to see what others were doing. Almost everyone were duty conscious,...
